Frequently asked questions about massage:

What should I expect during my massage therapy session?

  • Your massage therapist will ask you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions that need to be addressed, and to determine if massage is right for you.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

  • You should undress to the level you are comfortable.  For a full body massage, most get completely undressed.  However, if you feel more comfortable leaving your underwear on during the session, that's fine. The massage therapist can work around the clothes you left on the best that she can.

The massage therapist will give you the privacy to undress and get comfortable in privacy.

What do I do during a massage therapy treatment?

  • Make yourself comfortable.  If your massage therapist needs you to adjust your position, she will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed.  Otherwise move yourself to make yourself more comfortable.

How long will a massage treatment last?

  • The average full-body massage treatment lasts approximately one hour.  A half-hour massage only allows for a partial massage session, neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet.  Many people prefer a 60 or 90 minute massage for optimal relaxation.

How will I feel after my massage session?

  • Most people feel very relaxed.  Some experience a significant decrease or freedom from long-term aches and pains.  Many people feel slowed down for a short period of time and then notice an increase in energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity that can last for days.

If you receive a deep massage, you might be slightly sore for next day- much like a good workout at the gym.  Sometimes a hot shower or a soak in the tub can ease this soreness.

After your session you should increase your water intake a bit.  Just a glass or two more than normal is usually fine.  This helps keep your body's tissues hydrated and healthy.

When should I not get a massage?

  • There are few conditions that can prevent you from enjoying a massage.  You should not get a massage if you have a fever, cold/flu, or a contagious skin infection. Also consult a doctor while in your first trimester of pregnancy.

There are many other conditions in which your therapist may need to adapt her techniques (i.e. arthritis, osteoporosis) or avoid an area completely (i.e. cuts or burns).  With some conditions it is good to get an approval from your physician before you receive a massage (cancer, certain heart conditions, pregnancy).  This doesn't mean you can't get a massage.  But it is always better to take caution.  Your therapist can advise you about your specific needs.

What is aroma therapy?

  • Aroma therapy uses essential oils extracted from herbs, flower, and or fruits to naturally enhance the benefits of massage.  Before the massage, you will choose blend to add to the oil and lotion.  Enhance your massage!

What is Cranial sacral?

  • Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle noninvasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum.  The goal is to release compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.

What is Trigger Point?

  • A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body.  A trigger point in the back, for example, may produce referral pain in the neck.  The neck, may then cause pain in the head.  The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.  Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release.  In this type of massage for trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.  The benefits of trigger point massage are releasing constricted areas in the muscles thus alleviating pain.  You can experience a significant decrease in pain after just one treatment.  On a regular basis, this can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries.

What is a Chakra Massage?

  • A Chakra Massage is a 90 minute Massage working the flow of energy thru all seven Chakras and ending with Reflexology to help ground you.  This also includes one Chakra Mist.

What type of Massage is best for me?

  • The most common and best known type of massage is Swedish.  If it is your first time at the spa or you don't get massages very often, it is the perfect massage for you.  If you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure to get relief from muscle pain, it's better to book a Deep Tissue Massage.  Both types of massage promote relaxation and wellness!
